Q: What is the average cost to camp at a camping ground?
A: Prices are approximately $7-$15PP/Night.


Q: Is there an extra charge for additional drivers?
A: No however all drivers must be over 21-years of age and hold a valid international drivers licence.


Q: How old are the campervans?

A: All Backpackerscars.com campervans are late model (2002-2004) low-emission Nissan Caravans. They are well maintained both inside and out.
 

Q: Can we free-camp or do we have to stay in a campground?

A: While holidaying in a campervan offers the freedom to be completely self-sufficient and camp anywhere; Backpackerscars.com recommend that you stay in one of the South Island’s many campgrounds. The Department of Conservation maintain a network of basic campsites in the more off-the-beaten track locations, while commercial parks provide travellers with social opportunities and access to excellent communal facilities.



Q: Can you provide advice on the best places to visit and where to camp?
A: Yes – we are happy to share our local knowledge with you to ensure you have the best holiday possible.


Q: Is there space in the campervan to store our luggage?
A: There is ample storage space under the bed however we recommend soft sided bags over hard suitcases.


Q: If I pay with Credit Card is this transaction secure and will there be a surcharge?

A: Yes the transaction will be secure. Charges are as per the rental agreement.

Q: How do I secure a booking?

A: Once you have made a $300NZ deposit via the website we will confirm your booking.


Q: Is there an age limit for renting a Backpackerscars.com campervan?
A: All drivers must be 21 years of age or older.


Q: Are the campervans economical? How long does a tank of fuel last?
A: Our campervans are low-emission Nissan Caravans, they have a 50 litre tank. Depending upon the terrain and your driving style, a tank of fuel should last around 450 kilometres.


Q: What is the maximum number of passengers?
A: Our campervans have 3 seatbelts and are permitted by law to carry a maximum of 3 passengers (including the Driver). Fishing Campervan


Q: What is covered with the standard vehicle insurance?
A: Standard vehicle insurance will cover damage to the camper and other vehicles involved in the event of an accident.


Q: What is the excess payable for a claim?

A: The excess in the event of a claim is $1,000 for drivers over 25 years and $1,500 for drivers aged between 21 and 25 years. Note; backpackerscars.com Ltd will only take a credit card imprint for the excess to cover any damage or loss in the unlikely event of an accident.


Q: Can I reduce the insurance excess?
A: Yes the excess can be reduced to $250 by paying an addition per day premium. The rate for this is $20 per day for drivers over 25 years and $30 per day for drivers between 21 and 25 years.


Q: Does this insurance cover me to drive on unsealed roads?

A: Yes, but it is best to stick to the sealed roads where possible as accidents are most likely to happen off the seal. Vehicles are harder to control if you get into trouble on unsealed surfaces.

Q: Do we need snow chains in winter?
A: If you intend to travel in the mountains or to ski fields snow chains should be hired as a precaution. Conditions can change quickly and snow can sneak up and surprise you!


Q: Are campervan transmissions manual or auto?
A: All our campervans have an automatic transmission.


Q: Will we be warm enough in winter?
A: Our campervans are equipped with air conditioning (heating) while driving plus we provide heaters for use when camped in public campgrounds. Plus winter weight duvets are available to hire at an extra cost. These will ensure that you stay warm all night.


Q: Do the campervans have a stereo or entertainment unit?
A: All campervans have AM/FM radios, CD Players and MP3 capabilities.


Q: Is bedding provided?
A: Bedding can be hired for $20 per day. If you are using a camper for a long period there will be a maximum charge for Linen of $300. Linen package consists of clean sheets, duvets, duvet covers, pillows and pillow cases.


Q: Is it essential to book campgrounds in advance?
A: The South Island has many campgrounds to choose from and generally it is not essential to book in advance however to avoid disappointment if you are keen to stay at a specific campground it may be wise to call ahead. During the high season (December & January) popular waterside campgrounds may be booked out, so it is a good idea to book during this time.


Q: What side of the road do you drive on in New Zealand?
